McKee Reaches 1000 Kills, as Athenas Volleyball Defeats Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Brooke McKee reached the 1000-kill milestone midway through the third set before finishing with 23, and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team swung the match with a 7-0 run to end the third, as it took a 3-1 road win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium. 

Set scores were 25-11,18-25, 25-21, 25-19, as the 20th-ranked Athenas improve to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference with the loss. 

McKee came into the match with 988 career kills, and picked up her 12th midway through the third set to put CMS ahead 14-12 with the score tied at 1-1. Pomona-Pitzer, though, surged in front in the third and went ahead 21-18 with a chance to take a 2-1 lead, before the Athenas responded with seven points in a row to win the set. 

Anna Ryan started the 7-0 run with a kill, and Samantha Riter followed with an ace. After a Sagehen error, Ryan and Solvej Eversoll combined on a block for a 22-21 CMS lead. Eversoll followed with a kill, and Ashlee Sento had a kill to bring up set point, before a Sagehen error gave CMS the set and the lead in the match.

The Athenas took a 3-0 lead in the fourth set, behind two McKee kills and one from Stella Gajar. The Sagehens closed to within 9-7, before a 4-0 CMS run. Phoebe Shorney and McKee had two straight kills, Shorney and Gajar combined on a block to make it 12-7, and McKee followed with her 20th kill. The Athenas then held off Pomona-Pitzer the rest of the way, before Ashlee Sento finished off the match with a kill for a 25-19 win in the fourth. 

CMS won the first set 25-11, after roaring out to a 20-3 lead to start the match. A 5-0 run put the Athenas ahead 6-1, capped off by a kill from Shorney. A 6-0 run made the score 12-2 after McKee had a kill and a block with Gajar. An 8-0 run extended it to 20-3 after two consecutive kills from McKee and one from Ryan. The Sagehens found a little momentum at the end of the set to close to within 23-11, but Ryan and Eversoll had kills to close out the 25-11 win. 

McKee finished with 23 kills in 53 attempts, hitting .358, while adding 19 digs. Shorney had 12 kills in 21 attempts, hitting .476, and Ryan added 11 in 24 attempts. Mia Urosevic had 21 digs, while Hayden Lin had 24 assists and 11 digs and Josephine Park added 18 assists. 

CMS will have a week off before resuming play at Cal Lutheran on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
