With the win, CMS moves to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in the SCIAC, breaking a tie for second with the Regals, who slip to 6-3 in league play (and 13-4 overall).
The Athenas trailed 22-19 in the first set, but used a key 5-0 run to bring it to set point.
Phoebe Shorney had two kills in the run, and McKee added a kill and two blocks with
Stella Gajar. After Cal Lutheran staved off the first set point, McKee finished it with a kill off an assist from
Hayden Lin.
CMS led most of the second set, including five-point leads on four occasions, but Cal Lutheran battled back and took a 22-21 lead. Shorney had a kill to level the score at 22-22, and McKee put the Athenas ahead to stay before an error made it 24-22. Cal Lutheran again closed to 24-23, and McKee again finished the set off a Lin assist to give CMS a 2-0 lead.
The Athenas jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third set and went ahead 13-4, looking like they would pull away for the sweep. But once again, the Regals fought back in it, pulling even at 22-22. After a service error, McKee had another clutch kil for a 24-22 lead, and CMS was able to get the sweep on a setting error for the tight 3-0 win.
