CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Alyssa Fang scored an unassisted goal on a 25-yard shot off a turnover in the first half, and
Riley Zitar sealed it with a 25-yard free kick in the second half as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Occidental on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 11-2-1 overall and 6-2 in the SCIAC, while Occidental slips to 5-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in league play.
Fang's goal came with 11:54 left in the first half when she got to an Occidental clearance and took one dribble before letting loose with a 25-yard cannon into the upper-left corner for her second goal of the season.
CMS kept Occidental chances to a minimum, but the Tigers nearly got the equalizer in the 82nd minute as Caroline Murdoch played a free kick from just over midfield that bounced between a crowd of players in the penalty area, over the head of Athena goalkeeper
Sadie Brown and off the crossbar. Brown also denied Murdoch inside the penalty area on a loose ball in the penalty area off a corner kick in the 66th minute.
Zitar put the game away with 2:20 to go when she took a free kick from outside the left edge of the penalty area, and sent a blast under the crossbar for her first goal of the year.
CMS finished the game with a 15-5 edge in shots, with Brown making three saves to get the shutout. The Athenas will be back in action in one week when it takes on Redlands for an 11 a.m. road contest.
