CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Collin Ross and
Christopher Kim scored second-half goals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team took a big step forward towards claiming a postseason bid with a 2-0 home win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the victory, the Stags improve to 4-7-5 on the season and 3-3-3 in SCIAC play with three regular season games left. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 8-3-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference.
After the teams played to a scoreless deadlock in the first half, Pomona-Pitzer missed two chances over the crossbar from inside the six to start the second half. The Stags made them pay, as
Collin Ross belted a shot from 25 yards out to give CMS a 1-0 lead at the 58:25 mark.
Sean Lee started the play with a chip pass over the Pomona-Pitzer defense. Laidlaw then made one touch to lay it off to Ross, who one-timed it inside the left post.
Miles Demarest then came up big with five saves in a seven-minute span, keeping the game at 1-0, until Kim scored off a through ball with 8:27 left to effectively seal it.
Ben Bacdayan started the play with a through ball to
Leica Yasukawa, who one-timed it into a seam in the Sagehen defense that left Kim one-on-one with goalie Jasper Broad inside the penalty area, and Kim's low shot tucked into the net.
Zeno Bang also had a big play when he had a slide tackle near the top of the six to snuff out a possible Pomona-Pitzer equalizer. Demarest finished with a career-high eight saves to get the win for the Stags, while Jasper Broad had seven saves for the Sagehens.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts UC Santa Cruz for a 7 p.m. contest.
