CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Collin Ross had a goal and an assist off the bench to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team pull even at 2-2 with UC Santa Cruz, but Soren Groessl converted a penalty kick with 5:09 left to give the Banana Slugs a 3-2 win over the Stags on Wednesday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
The loss drops CMS to 4-8-5 on the year, while UC Santa Cruz improves to 8-5-1.
The Stags rested some key players with an important three-game stretch of league games coming up to qualify for the SCIAC tournament. UC Santa Cruz went up 2-0 with two goals 54 seconds apart from Groessl and Zander Crawford.
Ross came off the bench to tally a goal at the 32:25 mark, and then assisted the first career goal from
Nico McKee with 2:10 to play in the half.
After Groessl put UC Santa Cruz ahead, Keviin Xia came tantalizingly close to tying it in the final minute off a free kick, but the ball bounced wide of the left post.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest.
