CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team came back after dropping the first set, using a pivotal 9-0 run in the fourth to put it away, as it earned a 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 win over Redlands on Tuesday evening at Roberts Pavilion.
CMS avenged a five-set loss to Redlands earlier this season and improves to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the SCIAC with the win. Redlands slips to 12-8 overall and 6-6 in the SCIAC with the defeat.
Brooke McKee had 16 kills and five service aces, four of which came during the 9-0 run in the fourth set that turned a 16-13 deficit into a 22-16 lead. The Bulldogs held a 12-6 lead in the fourth as it had designs on taking the match to five sets for a second time, but
Solvej Eversoll had a kill and
Shae Delany had an ace to get the score back within 13-10.
After an exchange of points made it 16-13, Redlands had a pair of attacking errors, and then McKee had three straight aces to put the Athenas up 18-16. Delany had a kill, then McKee had another ace, which hit the tape and fell over on the line, to make it 20-16.
Stella Gajar followed with a kill, and Delany added another kill to finish off the 9-0 run.
Redlands got two points back to close it to 22-18, but Gajar and
Anna Ryan followed with kills, and Ryan and Eversoll finished off the match with a block for a 25-18 set victory and a 3-1 win.
Delany finished with 12 kills, and a career-high 29 digs, 13 of which came in the third set as the Athenas won 25-23. McKee had a kill off an assist from libero
Mia Urosevic to make it 24-22, and after Redlands fought off a set point, McKee had a tip kill for a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead. The second set had CMS up big at 22-13, before Redlands came all the way back to 24-22 before the Athenas were able to knot it 1-1.
CMS will be back in action when it takes on Occidental on Friday on the road, before returning to Roberts Pavilion to face Chapman on Saturday at 5 p.m.
