CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Nick Kennedy scored four goals, but the top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team came up just short in overtime against No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer, falling 10-9 in overtime on the road at Haldeman Pool.
The loss snaps a 12-game winning streak for the Stags, who fall to 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens take over first place at 8-0 and have the inside track to earn the top seed in next month's SCIAC Tournament.
Donovan Davidson scored the only goal of the fourth quarter, which tied the score at 8-8 with 3:51 to go, but neither team could break the tie in regulation. Jaden Winters scored the only goal of the first overtime for Pomona-Pitzer, and Zach Whitfield added one in the second overtime to make it 10-8, before Kennedy closed the gap to 10-9 with 1:33 to go.
CMS had two more chances to tie, after
Jake Taylor came up with a big save, but the Sagehens came up with a key stop in the closing seconds and were able to run out the clock.
Gavin Netherton,
Ivey Gehring,
Luke (Bear) Weigle and
Thomas Walker also had goals for the Stags. Taylor finished with 11 saves in the defeat, while Greg Moore had nine for the Sagehens.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier for a 10 a.m. contest at Axelrood Pool.
