Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Stags Water Polo Closes Strong for 17-11 Win over Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Nick Kennedy scored six goals, including two key ones 16 seconds apart in the fourth quarter in a game-ending 5-0 run, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team earned a 17-11 win over Whittier on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.

With the win, CMS improves to 17-5 overall and 8-1 in the SCIAC, bouncing back after seeing its 12-game winning streak snapped in overtime on Wednesday night.

The Stags only trailed when the game was 1-0, and built a 7-4 lead in the second on a goal from Gavin Netherton, but Whittier was able to close to a single goal five different times after that, the last coming at 12-11 with 5:55 to go.

Kennedy, though, answered with a key goal at the 4:55 mark, and then had a steal on the ensuing Whittier possession, and scored on a breakaway to make it 14-11 with 4:39 left.

Thomas Walker extended it to a 3-0 run with 3:56 left, before Kennedy scored his sixth of the game at the 3:02 mark. Christopher Petrossian capped off the scoring in the final minute.

Jeffrey Koretz had three goals for the Stags, while Walker had two goals and a team-high three assists. Petrossian and Donovan Davidson each had two goals, while Jake Taylor had nine saves in goal.

CMS will be back home again on Saturday for Senior Day in an 11 a.m. contest at Axelrood Pool.
