CMS Volleyball Falls In Five Sets At Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to level the match twice, but Redlands was able to take the fifth set 15-13 and earn a 3-2 win over the Athenas on Friday evening at Currier Gymnasium. 

Set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-14, 18-25, 15-13 as Redlands improves to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC with the win. CMS slips to 8-5 overall and 2-2 with the loss. 

A Samantha Riter ace gave the Athenas a 7-4 advantage in the fifth. Shae Delany came up with kills to put CMS ahead 9-7 and 10-8, and then combined on a block with Solvej Eversoll to make it 11-8, but Redlands then went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-11 lead.  

Anna Ryan stopped the momentum with kill to get the Athenas back within 13-12, but Lily Houston answered with a kill for Redlands. Brooke McKee fought off the first match point with a kill for CMS, but Lily Kautai won it for the Bulldogs with a kill to make the fifth set 15-13. 

CMS was in danger of falling behind 2-0 after Redlands took the first set 25-22 and went ahead 24-22 in the second. However, the Athenas were able to fight off the two set points, with McKee getting back-to-back kills to tie it 24-24 and then put CMS ahead 25-24. Stella Gajar and Phoebe Shorney then combined on a block for a 26-24 win to level the match at 1-1. 

Redlands controlled the third set, winning it 25-14, but CMS was able to regroup and earn a 25-18 win in the fourth. CMS actually went ahead 24-14 on a block from Delany and Eversoll, and the Bulldogs fought off four set points to close the gap to 24-18, before Eversoll finished the set with a kill to bring it to a fifth. 

McKee had 16 kills and 12 digs for CMS, while Delany had 13 kills and 18 digs. Gajar had seven blocks and Mia Urosevic had 22 digs to lead the CMS defense, while Samantha Riter had 23 assists and 13 digs and Hayden Lin had 21 assists and 16 digs. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Occidental for a 4 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
