CLAREMONT, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team bounced back from a five-set defeat yesterday to knock off Occidental in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 as CMS improves to 9-5 on the season and raises its SCIAC record to 3-2, while Occidental slips to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in league play with the loss.
Shae Delany led CMS with 12 kills, while
Anna Ryan had a career-high 10.
Mia Urosevic led the defense with 17 digs.
Stella Gajar had two straight aces to cap off a 4-0 run and give CMS a 13-7 lead in the first set. A
Brooke McKee kill capped off another 4-0 run that made it 17-9, and
Solvej Eversoll finished off the 25-18 set with a kill.
The second set was 17-17 before CMS went on a 6-0 run on
Skye Dunn's serve, with
Lauren Staples and Eversoll combining on a block to cap it off after a Dunn ace, while Delany had two kills and a block during the run as well. Staples had a kill to make it 24-18, and Delany finished off the set with a kill for a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead.
The third set saw CMS break it open with a 6-0 run, which included a Delany ace and two straight Ryan kills. Delany had a kill to make it 24-15, and then combined on a block with Eversoll to finish it.
CMS will be back in action on Tuesday with a road match at Chapman.
