ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman volleyball team came back from eight points down to win the first set 25-23, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps responded to win the next three sets in increasingly dominant fashion for a 3-1 win over the Panthers on Tuesday evening.
Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14 as CMS moves to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC with the win. Chapman slips to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play with the loss.
The second set was tied 15-15 with Chapman having a chance to take a 2-0 lead, but
Shae Delany had a service ace,
Solvej Eversoll and
Anna Ryan had a block, and
Brooke McKee had a kill to put CMS ahead 18-15. The Panthers got back within 22-20 and 23-21, but Delany had kills both times, before Ryan and Eversoll had another block to give CMS a 25-21 win and a split of the first two sets.
Eversoll finished off a 25-18 third set win with a kill. The fourth set saw CMS lead 15-12 before an 8-0 run broke it wide open, capped off by a
Stella Gajar kill off an overpass. Setter
Samantha Riter then finished off the match with a kill to take the fourth set 25-14.
McKee had a team-high 19 kills to go with 13 digs, while Delany also had a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs. Mia Urosevcic had 29 digs, while
Hayden Lin tallied 29 assists and Eversoll finished with eight blocks.
CMS will be back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion, before crossing Sixth Street for a rivalry match with Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 4 p.m.
