Athenas Soccer Comes Away with Road Win over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - Cate Lewison scored in the goalmouth with 16:16 left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and help give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team a 3-1 win over Caltech on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, CMS moves to 10-2-1 on the year and 5-2 in the SCIAC, while Caltech slips to 1-6-1 overall and 1-5 in league play.

The game-winner was set up after a corner kick from the right ended up on the far side of the field. Annika Marshall sent a ball in from the left sidelint into the box that took a deflection in front of the goal, and Lewison was able to finish for her third goal of the season.

Sena Howell then gave CMS an insurance goal with 7:17 left in the contest on a counter up the left side of the field, cutting back into the box and tucking a hard, low shot inside the far post.

The Beavers struck first at the 24:17 mark of the first half when Alexa Baxter had a header from inside the box. However, Flora Glantz was able to answer back when she finished in front after a shot was saved off the crossbar, and then bounced off a Caltech defender into the goalmouth with 15:57 left in the half.

Andra Marinescu made a pair of second-half saves to get the win in goal, the first of which kept the game tied, and the second of which maintained a 2-1 lead moments after the Athenas went in front. CMS finished with a 27-5 edge in shots on the day and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday when they return home to face Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest, after emerging with three wins on its three-game road swing to Chapman, La Verne and Caltech.
