CLAREMONT, Calif. - Hayley Wang scored 16 points off the bench to lead five players in double figures as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team cruised to an 85-55 win over Whitworth on Thursday night at Roberts Pavilion.
With the win, the Athenas now stand at 4-1 on the young season, while Whitworth slips to 0-3 with the defeat.
Tanya Ghai added 12 points,
Renee Chong and
Katie Resendiz each had 11, and
Jane Hewitt chipped in with 10 for the Athenas, who shot 13-26 from beyond the arc while holding the Pirates to just 3-13 from beyond the arc.
Whitworth actually got off to a quick start and led 7-0, but Chong hit three three-pointers in a row to put the Athenas ahead 9-7. Whitworth went back ahead 13-9, but CMS scored the next seven points to take the lead for good, with
Laura Strenk knocking down a three-pointer to make it a 14-13 CMS lead and Wang following with two foul shots.
The Athenas then had a 15-0 run spanning the first and second quarters to turn a 16-15 lead into a 31-15 advantage. CMS had the last seven points of the first to take a 23-15 lead, with Wang scoring in the paint, Hewitt knocking down a three-pointer, and Resendiz closing with a layup.
Wang then opened the second quarter with a layup, Ghai knocked down a three, and Wang followed with another three to stretch the lead to 16.
Cate Shingler knocked down two foul shots to push it to a 20-point margin at 41-21, before the Athenas settled for a 48-32 lead at halftime.
Ghai opened the second half with a three-pointer, and the Athenas were able to cruise through the second half, leading by as many as 32 before the 85-55 final margin.
Resendiz had a team-high nine rebounds, while
Caleigh Edwards had seven rebounds and a team-high five assists. CMS had only nine turnovers as a team, while forcing 21.
The Athenas will be back in action for the David Wells Classic next week, taking on Oberlin on Friday at 3 p.m. at Pomona-Pitzer and hosting Babson on Saturday at 5 p.m.
