CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Renee Chong of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Nov. 23, the conference office announced today.
Chong had five steals as CMS held two opponents to an average of 52 ppg in sweeping a pair of contents. She had two steals and led CMS with five defensive rebounds against UC Santa Cruz in a 60-49 win on Monday, while helping hold the Banana Slugs' starting backcourt to a combined 5-25 shooting from the floor.
Against Whitworth on Thursday, she added three more steals in an 85-55 win. The two teams shot a combined 5-31 from three-point territory and had a combined 41 turnovers, due largely to the Athenas' perimeter defense. Chong was also solid offensively, shooting 50 percent from the floor over the two games (10-20) with no turnovers.
CMS has now had two award winners on the young season, after
Payton Sugar won the Offensive Player of the Week honor following her 21-point performance in a win over Mary Hardin-Baylor.
CMS will be back in action this weekend when it co-hosts the David Wells Classic on Friday and Saturday, playing Oberin at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday at 3 p.m. and hosting Babson on Saturday at 5 p.m.
