Balanced Attack Leads Athenas Basketball Past Caltech 81-49

PASADENA, Calif. - Caleigh Edwards had 17 points on 7-9 shooting to lead four players in double figures as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team closed out the calendar year with an 81-49 road win over Caltech on Wednesday afternoon. 

With the win, CMS moves to 9-2 on the year and stays perfect in the SCIAC at 3-0. Caltech falls to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in league play with the loss. 

Katie Resendiz returned to the lineup after missing Sunday's non-league defeat to Hamline and had 12 points on 5-7 shooting, including 2-2 from three. Haylie Wang also had 12 points, while Laura Strenk chipped in with 10. Naima Joseph had five points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, while Tanya Ghai had six steals to pace the defense. 

CMS broke the game open with 27 points in the second quarter, stretching a 21-10 lead after the first up to 48-21 at the break. Cate Shingler ended the first quarter with a basket, and the Athenas scored the first 11 points of the second, with Resendiz and Strenk hitting three-pointers around a pair of jumpers from Edwards to stretch the run to 13-0 and make the score 32-10. 

Strenk finished off the half with a jumper to make the score 48-21 at intermission, and Jane Hewitt gave CMS its first 30-point lead at 63-33 with a pair of foul shots. Audrey Bayless hit a three-pointer and Hewitt added a jumper to give the Athenas their largest lead at 38 points before settling for a final margin of 32. 

CMS and Caltech will meet again for the second time this week on Saturday, when the Athenas host the Beavers at Roberts Pavilion for a 4 p.m. contest.
