CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Caleigh Edwards had 18 points and
Haylie Wang added 10 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team held off a strong effort from Caltech for a 70-56 win on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
With the win, CMS moves to 10-2 overall and stays perfect in the SCIAC at 4-0. Caltech, which only dressed six players was able to whittle a 15-point lead down to six in the final quarter, but slips to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Beavers were able to take a 16-11 lead early in the second quarter, but CMS caught fire to take the lead for good at 22-16, with Wang starting it off with a jumper, followed by two three-pointers from
Payton Sugar sandwiched around one from Edwards.
Jane Hewitt closed out the first half with a layup to give CMS a 32-23 lead at the break, and Edwards started the second half with a three to push the lead to 12.
Kylie Wang's fast break layup pushed the score to 53-38 with 3:13 left in the third, but Caltech battled all the way back to within 62-56 with 3:01 left.
Renee Chong, who had been sitting most of the second half, was re-inserted and buried a three-pointer to start a game-closing 8-0 run to seal it.
Naima Joseph had three bkocks and
Haylie Wang added tow to lead the defensive effort, while Edwasrds added four steals.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Occidental, looking to move to 5-0 in the SCIAC.
