Resendiz, Edwards Register Double-Doubles as Athenas Defeat Occidental 70-61

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - Katie Resendiz led all scorers with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned a 70-61 win over Occidental Wednesday evening at Rush Gymnasium.

CMS moved to 11-2 overall with the win, while staying perfect in the SCIAC at 5-0. Occidental dropped to 5-6 on the season with the loss and 0-2 in league play. 

Resendiz made 9-of-17 attempts from the field and added two steals for the Athenas. Caleigh Edwards also had a double-double with 14 points and tied a season high with 14 rebounds for CMS while Haylie Wang tallied 11 points and Renee Chong added 10 points for the Athenas. CMS outrebounded the Tigers 48-36, while scoring 12 second chance points for the game.

Paige Yasukochi led Occidental with 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Dara Tokeshi had 11 for the Tigers while Emily Ko and Ainsley Shelsta added 10 apiece, respectively. 

The Tigers held a 17-14 lead in the first quarter behind shooting 50 percent from the field. Occidental led by as many six, 27-21 with 5:11 in the second quarter after Ila Giblin made a layup but CMS was able close out the period on a 11-4 run, taking a 32-31 halftime lead. 

Resendiz made three-pointer to give the Athenas a 40-33 lead two minutes into the third period. CMS led by as many as 12, 54-42 after Edwards made two free throws with 1:48 left to play but Occidental made back-to-back threes to cut their deficit to 54-48 through 30 minutes of play. 

Tanya Ghai made a jumper to start the fourth period and Chong added a layup to give CMS a 58-48 advantage with 7:15 remaining. Shelsta made a layup to get the Tigers within five, 59-54 with five minutes remaining but the Athenas did not allow Occidental to get any closer while outscoring them 16-13 for the period. 

The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday when they host Chapman for a 4 p.m. contest.
