Stags Tennis Drops Pair of 4-3 Decisions to Division II Teams to Open Spring Season

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team opened the 2025 spring season with a pair of matches against Division II opponents and fell by identical 4-3 scores to Concordia (Irvine) and Point Loma Nazarene on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Advik Mareedu had a strong day at No. 1 singles for the Stags, winning 6-4, 6-2 against Concordia and 6-0, 6-2 against Point Loma to start his spring season off at 2-0, after winning the ITA Cup in the fall.

Matthew Robinson also added a pair of wins, taking his match at No. 2 singles 7-6, 6-4 in the opening match against Concordia, and then prevailing in three sets against Point Loma

Caleb Settles added a singles win against Concordia, winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, while Anirudh Gupta took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Point Loma. Settles and Brandon Vu had a dominant 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles in the Point Loma match, but the Sea Lions were able to take the doubles point after a 7-5 win at No. 2.

The Stags were playing without senior Tarm Rojanasoonthon and junior Warren Pham, who were the No. 5 and No. 6 singles players a year ago when the Stags reached the NCAA Division III Championship match, both going undefeated in singles at nationals (quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals).

CMS will be back in action on Sunday, when it travels to face Division I UC Riverside at 10 a.m., and then returns home for its first Division III match of the season against Brandeis at 5 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
