Athenas Lacrosse Pulls Away from Occidental for Dominant 24-8 Win

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team was tested by Occidental, leading just 11-7 early in the second half, but closed on a 13-1 run to pull away for a 24-8 win on Wednesday evening.

The win moves CMS to 2-0 on the young season, while Occidental opens its season at 0-1. Kaia Scott and Kate Larson each had four goals to lead the Athenas, Grace Minturn added three, and Ava Goldson had two goals and four assists for a team-high six points. Julia Ryan had 31 draw controls, one game after tallying 23 in a win over Cal Lutheran, earning her SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Ella Skoglund scored twice for Occidental in the final minute of the first half to make it 11-6 in favor of CMS at intermission, and the Tigers tacked on another goal to start the second half and get within four. CMS rattled off the next five goals, beginning with one from Scott, followed by one from Larson, one from Ryan and two from Minturn. Occidental got one back, but CMS scored the final eight goals of the game, outscoring the Tigers 7-0 in the fourth quarter to make the final 24-8.

Maggie Griffis scored two straight goals 19 seconds apart to put CMS up 3-1 with 10:26 left in the first quarter. Stella Hansot capped off the first quarter with a goal to make it 6-3, and Minturn, Avery Monahan and Goldson opened the second quarter with three straight goals to make it 9-3. Monahan and Goldson each tallied their second to make the score 11-4, before Occidental was able to get the next three spanning both halves.

Minturn had three caused turnovers to lead the Athenas, while Larson had a team-high three ground balls. CMS finished with a 42-20 edge in shots and a 32-2 edge in draw controls, thanks to Ryan's dominance.

CMS will be back in action on Friday night when it hosts Chicago for a 7 p.m. contest.
