CMS Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 24 Chicago

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The University of Chicago Women's Lacrosse team got its offense clicking in the second half after holding a 3-2 lead at intermission and went on to capture a 13-6 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday evening at Zinda Field. 

Chicago opens the season 1-0 win the win, while CMS drops its first game as it falls to 2-1. 

Holly Shankle had 15 saves in goal for CMS, keeping the Athenas close until the Maroons were finally able to pull away in the second half. Maggie Griffis and Kaia Scott each had two goals to pace the offense. 

Scott had the only goal for either team in the first quarter, and Griffis scored with 11:16 left in the half to put CMS ahead 2-1. The Maroons tallied the next six goals in a row, though, before Kate Larson ended the drought when she converted on her own rebound after he initial free position shot was saved. 

That swung the momentum temporarily, as Griffis scored her second and Julia Ryan converted with 1:29 left in the third to make it a 7-5 game going into the fourth. Scott answered a Maroon goal with 13:22 left to make the score 8-6, but Chicago scored the final five goals to earn the 13-6 victory. 

Ryan had 12 draw controls, after tallying 23 against Cal Lutheran and 31 against Occidental in her first two games. Griffis and Ava Goldson tied for team high honors with two caused turnovers, while Ava Marra led CMS with four ground balls. 

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it returns to SCIAC play for a 7 p.m. game against Chapman.
