Summer Matsik and
Kate Larson each had three goals, and
Julia Ryan continued to be dominant on draw controls with 20, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team ended the first half on a 9-0 run and earned a 19-10 win over Chapman on Wednesday to remain perfect in SCIAC play.
The Athenas improve to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, while Chapman moves to 0-2 on the year, both league games.
Chapman scored the first two goals of the game in the first 8:08, but the Athenas then rattled off nine straight to take a 9-2 lead into the break. Matsik started the run 22 seconds after the Panthers went ahead 2-0 to make it 2-1 with 6:30 left in the first quarter. Ryan then knotted the game up with 5:33 left in the first stanza, and
Maggie Griffis gave CMS the lead for good 26 seconds later.
The score stayed at 3-2 heading in to the second quarter, and six different Athenas scored over the next 15 minutes to make it a 9-2 game at the half.
Ella Brown started off the second with a goal off a pass from
Lily Bishop, who then rushed up field for an unassisted goal to make it 5-2. Griffis followed with her second, and then
Ava Goldson,
Paige Morgan and
Taylor Daetz tallied goals to give CMS a seven-goal lead at the break.
Maya Mihara scored to make it 12-3 in favor of the Athenas with 8:38 left in the third quarter, but the Panthers battled to close it back to within 13-6. Larson had a buzzer-beater to end the third to push the lead to 15-7, and then started off the fourth with two straight goals to get the lead up to 10, before CMS settled for a 19-10 final margin.
Holly Shankle got the win in goal with seven saves in the first half, allowing two goals. Brown finished with two goals and two assists, and Goldson had a goal and two assists for the Athenas. Defensively, Mihara had three caused turnovers, while
Chloe Klein and
Natalie Teare added two apiece, and Teare and
Stella Hansot each had a team-high three ground balls.
Ryan's 20 draw controls marked her third time over 20 in SCIAC games this season, including 23 in the opening game against Cal Lutheran, and 31 in a win at Occidental.
CMS will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Colorado College for a non-conference contest.
