CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Ava Goldson had two goals and two assists and
Julia Ryan had 21 draw controls, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team came up just short against No. 15 Trinity, falling 12-10 on Tuesday at Zinda Field.
With the loss, CMS falls to 4-4 on the year, with all four losses to nationally ranked teams (Chicago, Colorado College, Pomona-Pitzer, Trinity). The Bantams move to 3-2 on the season with the win.
Natalie Teare led a strong defensive effort with four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while
Summer Matsik and
Amelia Ulmer each added two goals.
Ulmer and
Kaia Scott answered first quarter goals for Trinity to make it 2-2 at the end of the first 15 minutes, but the Bantams held a 4-0 edge in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
The Athenas trailed by as many as five at 8-3 with 7:20 left, but came back with three goals in a row, as Goldson, Ulmer and Matsik each found the net in the span of two minutes to pull CMS within 8-6.
Lily Bishop answered a Trinity goal with 1:45 left in the third to make it 9-7, before the Bantams closed out the third with a goal on their final possession, and scored again on the first possession of the fourth to make it 11-7.
Paige Morgan scored off a Goldson feed to get a goal back 18 seconds later, and Matsik scored to make it 11-9.
After Trinity scored with 4:48 to go, Goldson had a free position tally to give the Athenas a chance late, but Trinity was able to run out the final 1:15 to preserve the win.
CMS will be back in action when it hosts Williams on Monday night at 7 p.m.
