Top-Ranked Stags Tennis Sweeps Home Twinbill over UC Santa Cruz, WashU

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team defeated UC Santa Cruz 7-0 in the morning, and then was tested by No. 12 WashU in the evening match before prevailing with a 5-2 win. 

With the sweep, CMS moves to 9-2 on the season, and remains perfect against Division III competition. 

The Stags were locked in a battle with WashU after sweeping doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Caleb Settles was able to pull out a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, but the score end up tied 2-2 and the Stags were in three tight matches on the remaining three courts. 

Advik Mareedu came through for his second win of the day and remained perfect on the season at 18-0 in singles by coming from behind to take the second set for a 7-5, 6-4 win to give CMS a 3-2 lead. Anirudh Gupta then provided the clinch by controlling the third set in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win to give the Stags their fourth and decisive point. 

Josh Kim ended the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 4 to give CMS a 5-2 win. Kim and Mareedu added a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Settles and Brandon Vu won 6-1 at No. 2 and Matthew Robinson and Warren Pham earned a 6-4 win at No. 3. 

In the first match of the day, CMS took all three doubles courts, with Mareedu and Kim winning 6-2 at No. 2, Settles and Vu winning 6-2 at No. 2, and Robinson and Pham capping off the sweep with a 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3. 

The Stags won all six singles courts in straight sets, with Tarm Rojanasoonthon starting strong at No. 3 before picking up a 6-0, 6-3 win. Rohan Yarlagadda won 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4, Morgan Schilling took a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6, and Anirudh Reddy finished off the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 5. 

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Swarthmore for a 10 a.m. contest.
