Summer Matsik had four goals and
Grace Minturn added three goals and three assists as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned a 23-7 road win over Chapman on Saturday evening at Chapman Stadium.
With the win, CMS improves to 9-5 overall and 8-1 in the SCIAC, setting up a battle for first place with 7-0 Pomona-Pitzer next Saturday at home.
Amelia Ulmer also had three goals for CMS, while
Hannah Conte,
Paige Morgan,
Maggie Griffis,
Kate Larson and
Stella Hansot each had two.
Julia Ryan tallied 26 draw controls as she continues to lead the nation in that category by a wide margin, while Hansot added a team-high four ground balls and
Holly Shankle had five first-half saves to get the win.
Chapman held a 2-1 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter, but CMS scored the next 14 goals in a row. The Athenas closed on a 5-0 run in a span of 4:40 to take a 6-2 lead into the second. Minturn started the run with 4:40 left, and Ryan tallied a goal 38 seconds later. Ulmer scored two straight goals at the 3:29 and 2:49 marks, and Conte capped off the quarter with a goal off a Ryan feed.
Matsik started the second quarter with a goal, Minturn scored two in a row, and then Matsik scored twice 22 seconds apart to make it an 11-2 lead with 9:49 left in the half.
Kaia Scott tallied one to push the lead to 10, and Larson, Matsik and Morgan capped off the run with three more goals before Chapman scored with three seconds left in the half to end the run.
CMS suffered its only conference loss in overtime to Pomona-Pitzer in February, and can even the season series and pull even for first place with a home win over the Sagehens next Saturday.
