ORANGE, Calif. -
Advik Mareedu and
Josh Kim earned the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2, and the top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team went on to sweep singles and take a 7-0 road win over Chapman on Saturday.
With the win, CMS moves to 25-2 overall and 6-0 in the SCIAC, while winning its 25th straight match since falling twice on opening day to a pair of Division II schools (Point Loma, Concordia). Chapman slips to 4-13 overall, and 2-5 in the SCIAC.
CMS had to battle for the doubles point, as
Caleb Settles and
Brandon Vu started things off with a 6-2 win at No. 1, but the Panthers were able to get even with a win at No. 3. Kim and Mareedu were able to get the service break they needed after it was deadlocked 5-5 and came away with the 7-5 win to put CMS ahead 1-0 going into singles.
The Stags battled in singles as well, as four of the six courts involved tiebreakers, with only Warren Phan (6-3, 6-1 at No. 2) and
Rohan Yarlagadda (6-2, 6-4 at No. 6) able to cruise to straight-set wins.
Tarm Rojanasoonthon provided the clinch with a win in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 4, taking the match 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Mareedu then pushed the lead to 5-0 with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Caleb Wilkins, also taking the tiebreaker 7-4.
Matthew Robinson went three sets before coming away with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win at No. 3 and Settles concluded the match with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win at No. 5.
CMS will be back in action next weekend when it tries to finish off its 19th straight undefeated SCIAC regular season with a road match at Pomona-Pitzer.
