Minturn's 10-Point Night Secures Second Seed for Athenas Lacrosse

REDLANDS, Calif. - Grace Minturn had seven goals and three assists as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team took down Redlands 22-7 in the regular season finale on Thursday evening.

With the win, CMS improves to 11-6 overall and concludes the SCIAC schedule at 10-2, securing the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament. The two teams will play again on Wednesday in a SCIAC Semifinal at 7 p.m., which the Athenas will host at Zinda Field. Redlands slips to 12-5 overall and 8-4 in the SCIAC with a loss, after coming in with a chance to take the No. 2 seed with a win over the Athenas.

Minturn's seven goals set a new career high, passing her previous career-best of five set earlier this season against George Fox, while her 10 points surpassed her previous best of seven, set earlier this year against Whittier.

The first meeting between the Athenas and Redlands saw CMS win by just a 12-11 score, when it was missing midfielder Julia Ryan, the team's draw control specialist, due to illness. Ryan had 23 draws on Thursday in the rematch, helping CMS win the battle 24-7, after Redlands held a 17-9 advantage the first time around.

On Wednesday, Ryan had 30 draw controls as CMS defeated Whittier 28-5, helping the Athenas tie an NCAA Division III record with 34 as a team. Ryan actually had 31 in an earlier season game against Occidental, when CMS had 32 as a team.

The Athenas scored nine times in the first quarter on Thursday, almost matching their total from the entire game in the first meeting, when they rallied from a four-goal deficit in the third quarter to eventually win by a single goal, as the Bulldogs missed a tying shot wide at the buzzer.

Minturn opened the scoring 1:38 into the contest, and was followed 18 seconds later by a goal from Amelia Ulmer. Paige Morgan then scored twice, before Redlands got on the board to make it 4-1.

Maggie Griffis, who had assisted on two of the first four goals, answered right back, and Kate Larson and Minturn each added two to give CMS a 9-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Athenas led 13-6 at the half, but then scored nine straight goals in the second half to run a way with it. Ulmer and Minturn each had three goals in the spurt, while Larson, Summer Matsik and Rylie Hack each added one.

Morgan had three goals, two assists, three caused turnovers and six ground balls for CMS. Larson and Ulmer each finished with four goals, while Ava Goldson had four assists.

CMS and Redlands will meet for a third time on Wednesday for the right to advance to Saturday's SCIAC Championship, against the winner of top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer and fourth-seeded Occidental.
