THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team defeated California Lutheran University 19-7 in a SCIAC matchup held at William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Athenas move to 9-5 overall and 8-1 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran falls to 6-8 overall and 2-7 in league play.
The Athenas took an early lead with a dominant first quarter, scoring seven goals and maintaining control throughout the game.
Kate Larson scored the first goal with an assist from
Ava Goldson at 10:31. The team maintained momentum with
Julia Ryan securing multiple draw controls, leading to consecutive goals, including a man-up goal by
Amelia Ulmer and another by
Maggie Griffis. CMS finished the quarter with a 7-2 lead, highlighted by a key defensive effort from
Holly Shankle, who recorded five saves.
The second quarter began with CMS extending its lead as
Hannah Conte scored just 1:31 into the quarter, assisted by
Summer Matsik. This was followed by a goal from
Paige Morgan at 9:11, and Matsik added another shortly after to keep the momentum going. Although Cal Lutheran managed to score twice, CMS continued to dominate with another goal from Conte at 3:11, concluding the quarter with a 4-2 advantage. Ryan was pivotal in maintaining possession with multiple draw controls, contributing to the team's offensive success.
The third quarter commenced with Ulmer scoring early at 14:33, assisted by Goldson, followed by a quick goal from Goldson herself at 13:06, with Ryan providing the assist. Despite a brief response from Cal Lutheran, the Athenas extended their lead with goals from Matsik,
Grace Minturn, and a free position shot by Matsik again at 1:34. The quarter concluded with a goal from
Rylie Hack, assisted by Morgan at 0:17, bringing the CMS lead to 17-6.
The fourth quarter began with
Maya Mihara scoring a free position goal at 11:41. Conte added another goal for CMS at 4:24, extending their lead, and tying for the team lead with three goals. Matsik also contributed significantly, scoring three goals and adding an assist while successfully converting two free position shots. Griffis matched their scoring output with three goals as well, taking four shots with three on goal, and Ulmer added three goals to give the Athenas four players with hat tricks. Goldson added two goals and three assists on four shots, tying for team-high honors with five points.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Chapman, before returning home on April 19 for a key home contest with Pomona-Pitzer.
