GEORGETOWN, Texas -
John Laidlaw tied the score in the first half for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team, but host Southwestern was able to break the tie in the second half and earn a 2-1 win over the Stags on Sunday evening.
With the defeat, the Stags start off the year 0-2 with a pair of 2-1 losses, after also falling by the same score to No. 11 Trinity (Texas) on Friday. Southwestern begins the year 2-0 with a pair of wins on opening weekend.
Laidlaw scored from the center of the box with 16:05 left in the first half to knot the score at 1-1, converting off a pass from
Leica Yasukawa, who picked up his first collegiate point. Yasukawa had a bid to put CMS in front later in the half, but had his shot saved by Southwestern goalie Scott Johnson.
Bo Gardner had his effort for a tiebreaking goal early in the second half saved by Johnson, before Nico Cosgrove was able to give the hosts the lead with 28:30 left in the contest.
Collin Ross had a bid to tie with just over 20 minutes left, and
James Gomez had one with just over 15 minutes left, but Johnson came up with the saves both times.
Miles Demarest finished with seven saves for CMS, including two in succession late to keep the Stags in it. Johnson also finished with seven saves for the Pirates.
CMS will be back in action next weekend when it travels to the Northeast to take on Messiah and Gettysburg, before opening up at home against La Sierra on Thursday, Sept. 11.
