MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -
James Gomez scored with 3:44 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team a 4-3 win over Messiah on Friday evening at Shoemaker Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 1-2 on the young season, while Messiah, a storied program with 11 national championships to its credit, slips to 0-3 with the loss.
Messiah scored first in the seventh minute, and
John Laidlaw answered for the Stags in the 19th minute off a pass from
Sean Lee to make it a 1-1 game heading into the break.
Lee then scored just 27 seconds into the second half off a pass from
Collin Ross to put CMS in front 2-1. The final 20 minutes then saw wild back and forth momentum swings, with the Falcons tying it with 17:12 to go, before Ross answered back 1:50 later to put CMS back in front 3-2, converting after Laidlaw's first attempt was saved.
Messiah again responded with a goal with just under 10 minutes remaining, before Gomez put the Stags ahead for the third time with 3:44 to go, scoring off a feed from
Roby Hooper. The Falcons had one final corner kick with 24 seconds left, but their final shot attempt missed the target.
CMS will be back in action on Sunday when it takes on Gettysburg.
