NEWARK, N.J. -
Frankie Fragola scored a goal in each half, and
Sadie Brown had a four-save shutout, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team defeated No. 17 NYU on Sunday morning at NJIT.
With the win, CMS starts out the year 1-0-1 after tying Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday in its opener. NYU falls to 1-1 with the loss.
Fragola broke the scoreless deadlock after the Athenas drew a corner kick.
Elsie Lindeman served the corner inside the top of the penalty area, where it deflected to the far post. Fragola then settled it and turned, firing a shot inside the near post to give the Athenas a 1-0 lead.
Fragola then doubled the lead in the second half when she converted off an assist from
Ava Allen with 31:05 left in the contest. Allen made a long run up the right sideline, dribbling all the way to the endline before sending a low cross near the top of the six-yard box. Fragola then settled the ball, faked a shot, and used some quick footwork to create space before firing a shot inside the left post.
Brown had two more saves to preserve the shutout, the last coming on a diving effort with just over 20 minutes left. The Athena defense held tough the rest of the way, behind center backs
Nicolette Daniel and
Ivy Doran, outside backs Allen,
Carmel Randolph and
Annika Marshall.
CMS will be back in action on Friday for its home opener, when it takes on Life Pacific at 7 p.m.
