CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Jordan Yates scored her second goal of the season in the first half, and
Preslie Lampitt scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick in the second half, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team won its first home game of the season, taking a 2-0 decision over Life Pacific on Friday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, the Athenas stand at 2-0-1 on the young season, while Life Pacific suffers its first loss and falls to 3-1.
Yates opened the scoring at the 11:22 mark of the first half after
Ava Allen made a long run up the right sideline. Allen made it all the way to the end line and sent a low cross into the middle of the box. Life Pacific Valerie Lopez dove at full extension to get a fingertip to it, but Yates was in the first spot to slot home a shot from just outside the top of the six-yard box for her second goal of the season.
Lampitt gave CMS an insurance goal when she converted a penalty kick with 12:23 remaining to make it a 2-0 game, after Life Pacific was whistled for fouling
Sena Howell from behind in the box.
The Athenas finished with a 20-8 edge in shots, but Lopez was able to make nine saves to keep her team in it. Marinescu had one save to get the win for the Athenas, a diving stop to prevent the Warriors from tying the score late in the first half.
CMS will be back in action on Sunday at 11 a.m., when it takes on the Milwaukee School of Engineering at Pritzlaff Field.
