Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Big Second Half Leads CMS Women's Soccer Past MSOE 4-2

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Lexie Roth scored two of the four second half goals for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team, as the Athenas overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to take a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday at Pritzlaff Field.

Jordan Yates and Chloe Valkin added goals as well, the Athenas move to 3-0-1 on the young season, while MSOE slips to 0-3-1.

The Raiders got on the board early in just the second minute on a rebound tally from Etcheverria Abuin just 1:12 into the contest. That goal held up until the break, despite an 11-2 shot advantage for the Athenas.

Early in the second half, CMS found the equalizer as Cate Lewison sent a cross into the box that was deflected by a hand ball from the MSOE defense. Yates stepped to the spot, and buried the penalty kick for her third goal of the season at the 48:26 mark.

History almost repeated itself 10 minutes later, as another hand ball in the box resulted in another penalty kick, this time off a Yates shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Yates took her second penalty kick, but this time, hit it off the post. The rebound, though, caromed right to Lexie Roth in the middle of the penalty area, and she was able to put it into the empty net at the 58:26 mark to put CMS ahead 2-1.

Roth then scored again with 10:12 left in the contest, one-timing in a corner kick from Kateri Trujillo. That goal would prove to be huge, as Elizabeth Kuhn scored on a counter for the Raiders with 6:25 to play to close the gap back down to 3-2.

The Athenas were able to withstand some late MSOE pressure, and then sealed the game when Valkin scored from the right side of the penalty area in the final minute, bending a shot over the head of goalie Page Sanchez and into the far corner off a pass from Maria Mukhar

CMS finished the game with a 28-7 advantage in shots and a 16-1 edge in corner kicks.  The Athenas will be back in action on Thursday evening when they take on UC Santa Cruz at 7:30 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the CMS men's soccer team, which faces La Sierra at 4:30 p.m.
