CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Jordan Yates scored off a pair of first-half crosses from
Cate Lewison to lead the 20th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer to a 2-0 win over UC Santa Cruz on Thursday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 4-0-1 on the young season after moving into the national rankings for the first time since the end of the 2019 season. UC Santa Cruz slips to 2-2-1 on the year with the loss.
The two goals were almost carbon copies of each other, with the second one having a higher degree of difficulty. The first one came at the 12:15 mark as Lewison went down the right sideline and sent a cross to the far post that Yates was able to finish at the top of the six-yard box.
Then with 7:35 left in the half, Lewison bent a perfect cross from outside the box, and Yates rushed into the same spot and volleyed it out of the air into the net for her second goal of the contest.
CMS played tough with the lead the rest of the way, as
Sadie Brown finished with five saves to get the shutout, with solid defense played in front of her, led by center backs
Nicolette Daniel and
Ivy Doran and outside backs
Carmel Randolph and
Ava Allen. The best scoring chance for either team in the second half came on a long 50-yard run from
Elsie Lindeman, but Banana Slug goalie Ainsley Gove was able to make the stop.
The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday when they host Chapman in a non-SCIAC game at 11 a.m.
