John Laidlaw's Late Penalty Kick Gives Stags Soccer 1-1 Tie at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - John Laidlaw converted a penalty kick with 4:33 left in regulation as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team was able to salvage a 1-1 tie at Whittier in the SCIAC opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.

With the tie, CMS now stands at 1-3-3 overall on the season and 0-0-1 in league play, while Whittier moves to 5-0-1 on the year and 0-0-1 in conference.

Whittier scored in the 32nd minute, and it nearly held up the rest of the way, before the Poets were whistled for a foul in their penalty area with 4:33 to go. Laidlaw stepped up and slotted home the shot to enable the Stags to come away with a key road point.

The game was statistically dead even, with both teams taking 10 shots and both teams having five corner kicks. Miles Demarest had one save for CMS, while Jake Marks had four for Whittier.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
