CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Tanya Ghai had a season-high 28 points, including a career-best six three-pointers, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team ended up on the short end of a 75-71 overtime thriller to Hardin-Simmons in a battle of top regional teams on Friday morning at Roberts Pavilion.
CMS suffers just its third loss of the season as it sees its five-game winning streak snapped, falling to 13-3 on the year. Hardin-Simmons improves to an identical 13-3 record on the year with the win.
The Athenas led by eight points with 4:59 to go, but the Cowgirls were able to chip away and finally pull even with 28 seconds left on a three-pointer from Dylan Koele. CMS was able to hold for the final shot, but Jacqueline Berry (28 points, 11 rebounds) was able to get her fingertip onto a winning three-point attempt from Ghai to send the contest into overtime.
Caleigh Edwards scored the first basket of the extra session to put the Athenas ahead with 4:02 to go, but Berry answered with a jumper in the paint on the next possession. The score stayed deadlocked at 69-69 until Caroline Croft hit a running bank shot in the paint with 48 seconds left, and then extended the lead to four with a pair of foul shots with 18 seconds left.
Haylie Wang drove to the basket to cut the deficit to two points, but the Cowgirls were able to seal the game at the line in the closing seconds for a 75-71 win.
Ghai's six three-pointers were a career high, eclipsing the five she had on her way to a career-high 35 points at Occidental as a first-year. She also added a team-high five steals and a block on the defensive end. Wang had 15 points and eight rebounds and
Laura Strenk had 10 points, including a pair of fourth-quarter threes to help CMS build the eight-point lead.
The Athenas will return to action on Wednesday when they host Redlands for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
