ORANGE, Calif. –
Tanya Ghai had 17 points and
Katie Resendiz had 16 to lead a balanced offense with five players in double figures as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Chapman with a 75-63 road win on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, CMS improves to 16-4 overall and 10-1 in the SCIAC, remaining alone in first in the league standings. Chapman slips to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in league play with the loss.
Chapman had its last lead at 24-23 in the second quarter, before a 13-0 run gave the Athenas control.
Haylie Wang started the run with back-to-back baskets to put CMS up 27-24, and ended it with a three-pointer to make the score 36-24. In between,
Tanya Ghai,
Naima Joseph and
Caleigh Edwards each scored baskets to help CMS surge into the lead.
CMS lead 36-26 at the half, and stretched the lead to 14 at 56-42 at the end of the third quarter. A Resendiz three-point play extended the lead to 18 early in the second half, and the Athenas were able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Ghai had eight points in the final two minutes to help prevent any comeback hopes.
Laura Strenk had 13 points, including three three-pointers, for the Athenas, while Edwards finished with 12 points and Wang had 11. Resendiz had four steals and three blocks, and Ghai had four steals and two blocks, to key the CMS defensive effort.
The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday night for a key road contest at second-place Cal Lutheran.
