THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team never led, but was able to force overtime with a late three-pointer from
Laura Strenk, before Cal Lutheran was able to take a 69-62 win on Wednesday at Gilbert Arena.
The two teams are now tied for first in the SCIAC at 10-2, with the Athenas slipping to 16-5 overall and the Regals improving to 18-3. CMS and Cal Lutheran split the series with each other, which leaves the tiebreaker up in the air, should the two teams end up even.
Strenk gave the Athenas their first tie since 0-0 when she knocked down a clutch three-pointer with 1:22 to go to make the score 57-57.
Tanya Ghai had a key block to end one Cal Lutheran possession and give the Athenas a chance to win, but Kaitlyn Brongiel had a block in the closing seconds, and CMS wasn't able to get a clean look off the ensuing inbounds pass.
Ghai had a stepback to tie the score 59-59 in the overtime session, but Kaiya Mack hit two foul shots to put the Regals ahead to stay with 3:32 left. After Cal Lutheran went ahead by four, Strenk made two free throws to make it a two-point game, but CMS missed its final six field goal attempts as the Regals held on.
Resendiz had 17 points for CMS, and Ghai had 16.
Caleigh Edwards had 12 points and four steals, while Strenk finished with 10 points.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier for a 4 p.m. contest.
