EAGLE ROCK, Calif. -
Jordan Yates scored two goals less than two minutes apart in the first half to stake the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team to an early lead, and the Athenas went on to take a 4-0 road win over Occidental on Saturday.
CMS improves to 8-3-2 overall on the year, and 5-2-1 in the SCIAC, moving ahead of Occidental in the league standings (4-2-1).
Yates scored the first goal of the game at the 16:29 mark off a pass from
Frankie Fragola, and then scored her second goal at the 18:20 mark off a pass from
Ava Allen.
Yates increased her total for the season to six goals, despite missing the first three games after coming all the way back from her season-ending injury last year, and then coming back with a minutes restriction.
Just over five minutes later, the Athenas stretched their lead to 3-0 after a Fragola goal, which came off a feed from
Preslie Lampitt.
Robyn Dizon made it a 4-0 final with a goal midway through the second half.
Occidental actually held a 17-10 edge in shots, although the Athenas spent most of the game playing conservatively with a multi-goal lead. Andra Marinsecu had four saves in 78 minutes, before giving way to
Shannon Bennitt, who finished off the shutout by adding a save of her own.
CMS returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
