CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team won two home matches on Saturday, the first in dramatic fashion and the second in dominant fashion, as it earned a 3-2 win over Babson and a 3-0 SCIAC victory over Caltech.
Set scores against Babson were 20-25, 15-25, 27-25, 25-23 and 15-13 as CMS came from behind for a reverse sweep, rallying from two sets down, and behind 19-12 in the fourth. The Athenas then defeated Caltech 25-16, 25-13, 25-9 to improve to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the SCIAC, while Caltech slips to 4-11 and 0-6 in league play, and Babson falls to 12-4.
Phoebe Shorney had 16 kills against Babson, including a kill to put CMS ahead 14-11 and one on match point at 14-13 to secure the win.
Quincy Rodin also had a big kill at 24-23 in the fourth to force it to the fifth set, after combining on a block with Shorney to make it 24-22.
CMS was down 2-0 in sets, and led for most of the third before Babson moved in front 23-22.
Shae Delany had a big service ace to put CMS in front 24-23, and the Athenas were able to win the set 27-25 after an attacking error by the Beavers.
Babson, though, appeared to be ready to close it out when it took a 19-12 lead in the fourth. A 4-0 run gave the Athenas some momentum, as
Lauren Staples had two straight kills, and Selany and
Solvej Eversoll combined on a block.
The Beavers still led 21-17, when CMS went on a 5-0 run, with Shorney having two kills during the sport, as well as combing on a block with Eversoll. Delany also had an ace to tie it 21-21, before Shorney had a kill on an overpass, setting up Rodin's set-winning kill.
Babson led 8-7 in the fifth set, before
Samantha Riter had her second kill in the fifth on a fake set to put the Athneas ahead 9-8, before assisting a kill from Delany to make it 10-8. Delany had a kill to make it 11-9, and Shorney added one to put CMS ahead by three. Babson closed to within 12-11, but Delany and Shorney had kills to make it 14-11, and the Beavers were only able to fight off two of the three match points.
Shorney had her 16 kills on 31 attempts, hitting .355, while Delany had 14 kills and Rodin had 11.
Hayden Lin had 30 assists and Riter had 17 to go with three kills in four attempts, while
Sabine Kemos had eight kills in 13 attempts. Delany led CMS with 19 digs,
Skye Dunn had 17 and Lin had 16, as CMS got a small measure of revenge against a Babson team that defeated the Athenas in the NCAA Tournament in five sets a year ago.
In the nightcap against Caltech, Delany led CMS with 10 kills,
Anna Ryan had nine and Staples had seven.
Lila Westmacott had 15 assists and five service aces, as she had two extended runs on her serve, a 10-0 run in the second set that turned a 5-2 deficit into a 12-5 lead, and an 8-0 run in the third that turned an 8-3 lead into a 16-3 advantage, recording aces on four of the last five points.
CMS will be back in action on Tuesday night when it travels to Redlands for a key SCIAC contest at 7 p.m.
