LA VERNE, Calif. -
Sierra Troy scored her third goal of the week to put the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team ahead 1-0 in the first half, but La Verne was able to battle back twice to tie it and come away with a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.
The draw moves CMS to 10-3-3 overall on the season and 6-2-2 in the SCIAC, as it remains in third place in the SCIAC with two games left to play, after fourth-place Chapman lost at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday to fall to 6-4-1. La Verne moves to 4-6-1 in league play as it moves into a tie for fifth and tries to fight its way into the five-team conference tournament.
Troy got the Athenas on the board in the first half when she headed in a free kick from
Flora Glantz. Glantz took the kick from near the right sideline, and sent a high ball to the top of the six-yard box, where Troy outjumped the Leopards and put a header in under the crossbar.
Troy also scored both CMS goals in a 2-1 win over Azusa Pacific on Wednesday, and she finished off a three-goal week, giving her five goals on the season.
La Verne tied the score early in the second half, and the Athenas went back in front when
Ava Allen sent a cross into a dangerous area that was deflected in by a Leopard defender for an own goal. With 10:47 left, La Verne found a second equalizer from Alexandra Allen on a 25-yard rocket off a scramble to make the score 2-2.
La Verne had to withstand a furious late rally from CMS, which pinned the Leopards deep in their own end.
Sena Howell had a bid for a goal at the far post cleared away by Alexandra Allen, and moments later,
Jordan Yates had a chance from just outside the top of the six-yard box that resulted in a diving save from Katy Blue.
Preslie Lampitt had one final attempt from 25 yards out that forced Blue to make a diving save in the 89th minute
CMS finished with a 17-7 edge in shots, while La Verne goalies had 10 saves and their defenders had two.
Andra Marinescu had four saves for the Athenas, including a couple from close range, one of which prevented the Leopards from taking a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
CMS will be back in action when it travels to Chapman on Wednesday with a chance to secure the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Tournament with a win or a tie, before returning home to face Occidental on Saturday for Senior Day at 11 a.m.
