Athenas Soccer Secures Third Seed in SCIAC with Road Win over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – Jordan Yates scored with 4:53 left in the first half, and Lexie Roth added an insurance goal in the second half, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team picked up a big 2-0 road win over Chapman on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, CMS clinches the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Tournament and avoids the opening round 4-5 game as it improves to 7-2-2 in league play and 11-3-3 overall. Chapman slips to 6-5-1 in the SCIAC with the loss.

The game-winning goal was scored when Avni Udupa played a long ball from midfield towards the top of the penalty area. Yates ran between the two Chapman central defenders and was able to chip the ball over the head of Chapman goalie Sienna Gomez and into the net.

Andra Marinescu came up with a big save 10 minutes into the second half when she tipped a Chapman shot from in close over the crossbar. Roth then gave the Athenas some insurance when she blasted in a 30-yard shot under the crossbar off a Chapman turnover with 24:28 to go, making the score 2-0.

Marinescu finished with four saves to get the shutout for the Athenas, who held a 15-7 edge in shot attempts and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal.

CMS will close out the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Occidental for a senior day contest at 11 a.m., as the Athenas will honor their 11 seniors prior to the game.
