ORANGE, Calif. – Senior center
Hayden Lin went over 1000 assists for her career, finishing with 29 to raise her career total to 1018, but the Chapman volleyball team was able to hold off a comeback attempt from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to earn a four-set win on Saturday afternoon.
Set scores were 25-21, 13-25, 26-24, 25-22 as CMS came back from 10 points down in the fourth to close it to one late before the Panthers were able to hang on. The loss drops CMS to 11-10 on the year and 6-4 in the SCIAC, while Chapman improves to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in league play.
After dropping the first set, CMS took control of the second set quickly with a 5-0 run that featured two blocks from
Phoebe Shorney and
Stella Gajar and an ace from
Skye Dunn. Lin then reached 11 assists for the match and 1000 for her career when she fed Shorney for a kill to make it 13-6.
The lead grew to 10 points at 19-9 on another Gajar block, this time with
Lauren Staples, and
Solvej Eversoll,
Ari Clarkson and Shorney finished off the set with three straight kills.
Chapman came from down six points in the third to earn a set point at 24-23. Shorney was able to erase that set point with a kill, but the Panthers answered to go ahead 25-24. The Panthers then won an extended point to take the set 26-24 and go ahead 2-1 in the match.
Chapman carried that momentum over into the fourth set and went on a 9-0 run to take a 15-5 lead, before the Athenas had a furious comeback. Shorney and Eversoll had two straight kills to close the gap to 16-10, and Clarkson had a kill to make it 16-12.
After Chapman went up 18-12, Gajar and Clarkson combined on a block to make the score 18-15. Two Clarkson kills got the Athenas within two points at 19-17 and 20-18, before
Anna Ryan's kill closed the gap to 21-19, and Eversoll's kill got CMS within just one at 21-20. A Chapman attack then sailed out of bounds, but a tip was called, and a CMS challenge was unsuccessful. The Panthers then got the next two points to go ahead 24-20, and were able to win the match 25-22.
Shorney led CMS with 14 kills in 32 attempts, hitting .344 on the day, while Delany, Staples and Eversoll each had nine. Delany added 18 digs, giving her 955 in her career, while
Skye Dunn added 16 and
Samantha Riter had 13 to go along with 22 assists, giving her 933.
CMS will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer in a Sixth Street rivalry match at Roberts Pavilion at 7 p.m.
