CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water team received hat tricks from
Evan Liberatore,
Gavin Netherton and
Nick Kennedy as it capped off a 3-1 performance at the Gary Troyer Tournament with a tight 15-13 win over Air Force on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
CMS also defeated Mt. St. Mary's 13-4 in its first game of the day on Saturday, and closed out Friday's play with an 18-16 win over Concordia Irvine. CSU Fullerton handed the Stags their only loss of the weekend in Friday's opened with a 12-8 win.
The Stags and Air Force were tied 10-10 late in the third, but Liberatore was able to put CMS in front, and Netherton followed with a goal to give the Stags an 12-10 lead with four seconds left in the third.
Air Force pulled back within 12-11 on the first possession of the fourth, but
Tor Martin and Netherton each had goals to make it 14-11, and Kennedy helped seal it with a goal with 1:55 left to make it 15-12.
Martin and
Jeffrey Koretz each had two goals for CMS, while
Weston Hartel had a team-high three steals.
CMS got off to a 6-0 lead in the Mt. St. Mary's win, as
Connor Burks had five saves before allowing his first goal late in the half. Kennedy had four goals for the Stags, while Liberatore and Netherton each had two goals and an assist.
Chase Campbell had five saves in the second half, allowing just two goals.
The Concordia game saw a five-goal outburst from Hartel, while Kennedy had 10 points with four goals and six assists.
Fletcher Appeldorn also added a hat trick for the Stags, who broke open a 10-10 tie at the half with a 5-2 spurt to start teh third, capped off by a goal from
Calvin Donat.
Kennedy had three goals in the loss to Fullerton, while Netherton and Donat each had two and
Pete Ryan added his first collegiate tally.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it returns to SCIAC play with a road game at Caltech.
