CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Alex Wedemeyer broke a 0-0 tie with an RBI double in the sixth, and
Averi O tacked on a two-run double in the seventh as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned a 4-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the first game of a three-game series on Friday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer's Wig Beach Field.
CMS now stands at 2-0-1 on the young season, after earning a win and a tie in its season opening doubleheader against McMurry last Friday, while starting out league play 1-0.
The game was a pitcher's duel through five innings at 0-0, with
Hannah Adams allowing only two hits through the first five for the Athenas. In the sixth,
Giselle Lai got on second on a leadoff error, and Wedemeyer found the left-center field gap to plate Lai with the game's first run.
Lexie Stinson then had a sacrifice fly to right to score pinch-runner
Megan Kho to make the score 2-0.
Pomona-Pitzer got one run back with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but O found the right-center field gap to plate two runs and give CMS some insurance in the top of the seventh.
Delanie Stevens led off with a walk, and went to second on a single from Lai. After both runners moved up a double-steal, O plated them both to stretch the lead to 4-1.
O finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
Rachel Sapirstein was 2-for-3 with a walk. Adams went the distance to improve to 2-0 on the season, allowing four hits and one run.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Athena Field, beginning at 12 p.m.
