CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Avia Tuguldur had six RBI in the doubleheader, including a tying two-run single in the bottom of the seventh with the Athenas down to their final strike, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team avoided a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Athena Field.
Pomona-Pitzer took a 4-3 win in the opener, despite a two-run double from Tuguldur in the seventh, and then Tuguldur had all four RBI for the Athenas in the nightcap, in a game that was suspended in the eighth with the score tied 4-4. The game will be resumed on a date to be determined.
Tuguldur got CMS off to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap with a two-run, two-out single in the first after
Delanie Stevens and
Alex Wedemeyer both reached on singles. Pomona-Pitzer managed single runs in the second, third, fifth and seventh to go ahead 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Gaby Robel reached on an error, and Stevens had a bunt single that spun before coming to rest on the first-base line fdor a single. After
Giselle Lai sacrificed the two runners over,
Alex Wedemeyer walked to load the bases.
Rachel Sapirstein had a bid to tie the game with a hard grounder in the 5-6 hole, but Pomona-Pitzer third baseman Marie Milton made a diving snag and got the forceout at the plate for the second out. With the count 2-2, and CMS down to its final strike, Tuguldur hit a ball back up the middle to plate two runners and knot the score up 4-4.
Annabelle Ramirez then had a bid to walk it off with a sharp liner to center fielder, but it hung up and was caught to send the game into extras. CMS pitcher
Ella Yerkes snagged a comebacker with runners on second and third in the top of the eighth to keep the score tied 4-4, and
Danica Stirling had a one-out single in the bottom half before the game was suspended.
In the first game, CMS trailed 4-0 in the seventh, before
Parker Jones and
Rebecca Lambaren had back-to-back pinch-hit singles to put two runners on. Lai had an RBI single to cut it to 4-1, and Tuguludur had a two-run double to pull CMS within a single run, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to get the final out.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Suffolk University at 12 p.m.
