Four Pitches, One Win - Athenas Softball Defeats Pomona-Pitzer in Completion of Suspended Game

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Delanie Stevens hit a two-out double to score Hina Usuda from first with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team defeated Pomona-Pitzer 5-4 on Sunday afternoon in the completion of a game that was suspended on Feb. 14 due to darkness.

The win improves the Athenas' record to 5-4-1 on the year and 3-3 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer moved to 1-2, with all three games coming against CMS.

The game resumed with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and Danica Stirling on first base after an infield single before the darkness hit. After fouling off a bunt, Usuda hit a grounder up the middle that was fielded, resulting in a forceout at second.

After taking a ball on the first pitch, Stevens then drove one into the left-center field gap that rolled to the wall, and the speedy Usuda had no trouble scoring from first base standing to end the game after four pitches and two minutes of game action.

CMS nearly lost the game in the regulation seven innings back on Feb. 14, as the Athenas were down to their last strike, before Avia Tuguldur hit a two-run single to tie game up. Tuguldur had all four RBI in the first seven innings, including a two-run single in the first to give CMS a 2-0 lead, before the Sagehens were able to take a 4-2 lead into the final inning.

Stevens had a single in the seventh to help set the table and load the bases around an error and a walk to Alex Wedemeyer, and with two outs and two strikes, Tuguldur sent the game into extra innings, which was completed eight days later.

Stevens was 3-for-3 for the contest with the game-winning RBI, while Tuguldur was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Ella Yerkes went all eight innings to get the win (although none today, as the Stevens double prevented the Athenas from playing defense).

CMS will be back in action after a nearly three-week layoff when it takes on Hamline in a non-conference doubleheader on March 13.
