Athenas Close Out Busy Weekend with Split with Suffolk

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Danica Stirling was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Hannah Adams threw a three-hit shutout as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a 9-0 win over Suffolk in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday, before the Rams came back to take the nightcap 6-3.

With the split, CMS moves to 3-2-1 on the season, after five games in three days, which included a suspended game with Pomona-Pitzer yesterday due to darkness. Suffolk moves to 3-1 with the split.

In the opener, Giselle Lai and Alex Wedemeyer each hit RBI triples in the first inning to stake CMS to a 2-0 lead. A Stirling RBI single in the third made it 4-0, and Lexie Stinson followed with a two-run triple to make it 6-0.

Megan Kho finished off the third with an infield single to push the lead to 7-0, and Stirling had a two-out, two-run single in the fourth to help enforce the eight-run rule. Adams finished off her second shutout of the young season with three strikeouts, improving her record to 3-0.

CMS trailed 6-0 in the nightcap, but rallied to bring the tying run to the plate. Lai had an RBI single to score Delanie Stevens, and Riley Cooper tacked on an RBI single in the sixth. Gaby Robel added a third run on a two-out single to pull the Athenas within 6-3.

Ana Federico singled to lead off the seventh, and Wedemeyer walked to bring the tying run to the plate for a second time, but Suffolk was able to salvage the split.

CMS will be back in action on Friday when it returns to SCIAC action with a home game against Chapman at 2 p.m.
