CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Gaby Robel capped off a three-run fourth inning with a pinch-hit RBI single and
Hannah Adams threw a complete-game four-hitter to move to 4-0 on the season, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team opened up a three-game series with Chapman with a 3-1 win on Friday at Athena Field.
With the win. CMS moves to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while handing Chapman its first loss as the Panthers fall to 3-1 on the year, all in league play.
Chapman scored an unearned run in the first inning off of Adams, and Rose Malen retired the first nine CMS batters in order, before two errors to start the fourth opened the floodgates, as
Delanie Stevens and
Giselle Lai both stole second to put runners on second and third with nobody out.
After a walk to
Alex Wedemeyer,
Avia Tuguldur plated the tying run with a lineout to right field, with Lai advancing to third on the throw. Pinch-runner
Hina Usuda stole second, and
Rachel Sapirstein hit another sacrifice fly to put CMS ahead 2-1. Robel then hit a single into the 5-6 hole to plate Usuda and make the score 3-1.
Adams then took it from there allowing only two baserunners the rest of the way, one on a one-out single, and the other on a hit by pitch with two outs in the seventh, before getting the final out on a foul ball to left.
The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Chapman.
