CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Cate Lewison had four goals and
Julia Ryan,
Maya Mihara,
Ella Brown and
Amelia Ulmer each had three to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team to a 19-15 win over Bates on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.
Ryan had 27 draw controls as well, helping the Athenas to a 32-4 advantage as a team, while
Lyla Johnston had 14 saves in goal to get the win. Ulmer and
Grace Minturn each had four assists as well.
CMS led 11-9 at the half, and opened the second half on a 3-0 run to take a five-goal lead. Mihara started the run, and then Ryan and Lewison scored off of Minturn feeds to put CMS ahead 14-9.
Bates responded with three goals in a row to close to 14-12, but Mihara closed out the third with a goal with 20 seconds left to put CMS ahead 15-12 going into the fourth. Ryan opened the fourth quarter with a goal, and Brown and Ulmer scored two straight to put CMS ahead 18-13 with 7:55 left.
Bates led 5-3 late in the first quarter after a 4-0 run, but Ulmer was able to close out the first frame with a goal to close the gap to 5-4. After the Bobcats went ahead 6-4 with the first goal of the second, CMS rattled off three in a row to go back in front, with Mihara,
Kate Larson and Lewison each finding the net. Another 3-0 run from Lewison, Brown and Ulmer put CMS up 10-7 with 4:49 in the half, before CMS settled for an 11-9 lead at the break.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it returns to SCIAC play with a road game at Chapman, beginning at 11 a.m.
