Grace Minturn,
Amelia Ulmer and
Ella Seidel each scored four goals to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team to a hard-fought 17-13 road win over Chapman on Saturday.
With the win, CMS moves to 3-0 on the young season, as well as 2-0 in the SCIAC, while Chapman opens up its campaign with a tight loss.
The score was tied 9-9 midway through the third, when
Maya Mihara gave CMS the lead for good with 8:29 on the third-quarter clock, followed 38 seconds later by a goal from Seidel. After Chapman closed to 11-10, CMS scored three in a row, with Ulmer scoring twice around a goal from
Summer Matsik.
Chapman scored the final goal of the third quarter to make the score 14-11, but Minturn and Matsik each converted to give CMS its largest lead at 16-11, before settling for a 17-13 final spread.
Shots were even for the contest, with the Athenas finishing with 33 and Chapman tallying 32. Seidel had a team-high three assists and Minturn added two, while
Kate Larson added a pair of goals.
Julia Ryan finished with 22 draw controls, giving her at least 20 in all three games this season.
CMS will be back in action on Sunday, March 1, when it hosts the University of Chicago at 11 a.m.
